Ce dernier, infirme, nourrit une passion secrète pour Rita qu'il surprend un jour en charmante compagnie, alors qu'Ovide est en voyage d'affaires. Se sachant découverte, Rita décide d'avouer son infidélité à son mari. Meurtri, Ovide en éprouve de la rancoeur et se rapproche de Marie, la jeune femme qu'il a engagée comme secrétaire. Et ainsi Ovide se voit contraint d'offrir à Rita un voyage en Europe. Ce n'est qu'au tout dernier moment qu'il avoue à la jeune femme attristée qu'il n'a accepté ce voyage que pour sa famille mais qu'il préfère renoncer, faute d'amour. Et Rita s'envole seule. L'avion explose en plein vol. Ovide est immédiatement soupçonné non seulement en raison de sa décision de dernière minute, mais aussi pour une police d'assurances et surtout pour le volumineux paquet dont il prenait tant soin...
